Agony and Ecstasy

Most of you know I like to bicycle. It is a little more than a hobby. It is my outlet for all things athletic. Anyway, there is a ride in the valley affectionately called "The Tea Cup". It is also called the ""14 Hills Death Ride". The idea is to ride up and down every hill around the valley. There are evidently 28 roads up out of the valley. Yesterday I attempted the ride with a friend who is training for an Iron Man event. The ride was a little over 87 miles and took over 5 hours. It was profoundly difficult but we made it. I am not sure why I do things like that or why I like doing things like that. I do know I spent the better part of the evening feeling sore and happy. I kept thanking God for the great gift of exercise, challenges, a bicycle, a friend to ride with, and the feeling I had just finishing. I was struck by how our faith unlike many faiths is a faith rooted in t he physical. Our God took on a physical body, lived among us, died on a solid wooden cross, and rose again with a body people could see and touch. It is in Christianity that the Spiritual kisses the Physical right where we live. So it did yesterday for me.

Holy smokes (a religious term), joe and SK! That is a very impressive time. It took me two days! Congrats. Sweet Corn was great too, but nowhere near as difficult as that ride...

Faith...Jesus said we need to have the fath of a child. Years ago there was a young boy who attended church with us who had spina-bifida. This little guy was confined to a wheelchair most the time but could manage to use a walker on occasion.

This boy had more faith in his little finger than I ever had. He would light up a room when he rolled in. Happiest kid I ever knew. He told me his favorite song was "I'll Fly Away" 'cause he knew when he got to heaven he'd be free of his wheelchair and could "Fly Away".

This boy reflected Jesus to me. One day the Lord called him home and I knew that immediately he was free. He overcame all his "Hills of Agony" and is resting in the arms of Jesus!

The choir, as you could guess, sang his song at his funeral and everyone cried tears of joy.

The simple faith of a little boy. He knew at his young age exactly what God's plans were and how intimately he is involved in his life. May I learn to do the same!

I just wanted to say, that I really enjoy going to this site weekly to read your thoughts on life and walking with the Lord. Your messages speak to the heart and renew faith in this troubled world where hope sometimes seem bleak. Keep them forthcoming.
