The DMV and the Gospel

Every four years I have to go to the BMV (formerly the DMV) to get my license renewed. My birthday is coming up later this week so this was my time. I went down, stood in line, stepped up, handed over my license, and was told I had been "blocked". I wasn't exactly sure what that meant. Evidently, the state of Massachusetts had put a block on my renewal. I was told I needed to call the DMV in Massachusetts to clear it up. I called and was put on hold for 1 hour and 40 minutes. When I finally spoke with someone other than the recorder that told me every 55 seconds that all agents were busy (the recording did thank me for my patience which ended up being presumptive on their part), I was told that a Joseph A. Colfee had been pulled over with a Rhode Island license and had not paid his ticket. I asked what that had to do with me. They said I had the same birthday. Oh, of course, that makes perfect sense. He then informed me that I had to call Rhode Island to clear it up. I called Rhode Island and after 40 minutes on hold (the recorded voice came over every 18 seconds) I was told I needed to fax a copy of my birth certificate, a copy of my Social Security card, and a notarized letter saying that I had never been to Rhode Island. I am not making this up. I have yet to be unblocked. I came to the office and shared the story and one of my co-workers immediately said,"Wow, so I guess the Gospel had a chance to go deep yesterday." He said it in jest but it was a great thing to say. It has taken me a whole day to figure out what the Gospel has to do with all of this. I have an amazing capacity for self-righteousness. I am completely and utterly flabbergasted when I am innocent and treated as guilty or inconvenienced because of no fault of my own. The Gospel reminds me that it is not justice I need. I need mercy and lots of it. Even more mercy than the DMV in 3 different states. That one comment about the Gospel going deep has changed the way I am approaching this whole ordeal. The more I am pinched by injustice the more I will remember grace and then even if I end up driving to Rhode Island I will have something to be thankful about every mile. Oh, yeah, I suppose I will be flying since my license runs out Sunday.

I think about 4000 people would be happy to give you a ride to church on Sunday if you needed it.

We got a note from the Ohio DMV stating my daughter's license wouldn't be renewed because she hadn't paid court costs in Marion County (at least it was the same state). Turns out that a girl with the same first name only and same birthdate had committed a crime. Marion County, not believing that two people could be born on the same day with the same first name, merged their records and decided my daughter's Social Security number was the correct one, thereby transferring the other girl's criminal record to my child. What a mess that was.

I hope your situation is resolved soon. I'm so grateful for our awesome God that doesn't get us confused ("which one of My children are you, and what was it that you asked for?").

Maybe you should call the Coffey guy in Rhode Island and talk to him about the gospel. If you do have to drive, make sure you visit him.

Then again, maybe God has nothing to do with this at all. Maybe the response could and should be anger. The bible seems to be okay with that at times and in fact seems to be okay with it a great deal, particularly in the OT and less occasionally in the NT (money changers in the temple).

Maybe God wants that, for you to shake up the system abit with your anger, little old Joe Coffey in Hudson, Ohio. (Maybe he wants you to get angry so that you can see what little influence you/w really have in this world!) Nothing like a good bureaucracy to make that point.

I am reminded so often that I need to be very careful about what I think God wants me to do/is telling me to do. I suspect that most people feel the Holy Spirit as a nudging of emotion, rather than the verbal words of God that seemed prevalent in the OT.

As I read about Jehu this morning in 2 Kings, I once again recalled and remembered how he slaughtered the seventy sons of the king and put their heads in a basket. Of course, if someone did that today an said it was God's will, we would say they were looney and throw them in jail, likely executing them shortly thereafter. So, since he did it but wasn't looney by the bible's standards (though we all are, of course), I would presume that his direction from God was more direct than what we typically talk about today.

Would love to hear your views of present day versus OT revelation. Might be a nice blog subject.
